Who Else Lives Here?
I have been working on WELH with the forager Miles Irving. In collaboration with him, I produced soundscapes, currently installed outside at St James / Spring Gardens in central London. The project is part of the Crown Estate.
My work drew together field recordings, expert interviews, compositions, improvisation, song, poetry, and more into soundscapes which respond to the challenge of rewilding UK cities. Many thanks go to Miles, Ali, Roly, and everyone in the Free Range Orchestra.
Next time you are walking through a city, I'd encourage you to ask 'who else lives here?'
Earth to Earth
This is documentary material filmed by Kit Warren. The video is used with his generous permission.
The music was composed between the 18th and 22nd of November 2024 on Lossenham Farm. The kind work of the people there and the resources they so thoughtfully shared enabled this music-making to happen.
The music is kindly played by Hugh (harp), Mel (flute), Nick (cello), and Sam (piano). I am very grateful for their work.
For a Lamb
This was my A-level composition. It is based on 'For a Lamb' by Richard Eberhart.
It also uses the theme from John Tavener's The Lamb (1982).
This is a minimalist work, partially inspired by Graham Fitkin.
The piece is wonderfully performed by Stelios Chatziiosifidis, Karen Jolliffe, Matthew Brown, and Julie Peate (in quartet order).
I am also indebted to the work of Emily Renshaw-Kidd, who facilitated the recording.
A photo taken at the end of the final concert. I am in the orange shirt.
Competion Success
Excitingly, For a Lamb was chosen to be part of a composition symposium in the Portugese city of Guimarães. I worked alongside the Quiron Quartet, four other composers, as well as the composer Karl Fiorini. All of their wisdom, insight, experience, and friendliness meant that at the end of my time there the piece had totally transformed in my understanding of it. The most substantial change was that the sustained 5ths between 1st violin and viola were converted to harmonics, while some of the parts were rewritten for clarity and ease of position shifting on the fingerboard.
Here is an audio recording from the concert on the last night of the symposium in Portugal.
'Clean Harrison' was written for my school jazz band in 2022.
These are two tracks on which I collaborated (I played viola for them).
